Alzheimers and Dementia

Alzheimers and Dementia
Alzheimer’s and Dementia, what is the difference?

To make is plain and simple Dementia is the symptom and Alzheimer’s is the cause of the symptom.

Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease usually affects the persons thinking, concentration, memory and judgment which as a result can have an adverse effect on the person’s ability to perform daily activities.

At present, the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not know, however Alzheimer’s disease is fatal.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of Dementia that accounts for as much as 70% of all cases of Dementia.

Women are more likely to develop the disease then men. People who have a close relative such as a parent, brother or sister suffering with Alzheimer’s they have a slightly higher chance of developing the disease.

The main symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are memory loss, change in the persons behavior and/or personality, time and place disorientation and decreases ability in making judgments. Other symptoms can include loss of initiative, difficulties in performing daily tasks the person has been able to complete historically and problems with abstract thinking.

At first these symptoms can be subtle, the majority of sufferers start with slight memory loss as well as a slight change to their behavior and confusion.

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses the memory problems the person encounters can be more persistent and worsen over time.

Dementia

Dementia affects the persons memory, language ability to carry out daily activates and thinking. The person’s judgment and behavior can also be affected.

Dementia mainly occurs in people over the age of 65. It can also occur in those who have had an injury or contracted a disease that affects the brain function. Whilst Dementia is mainly seen and is more common in people over 65, it is not a normal part of the aging process.

The causes of Dementia is when the brain cells die or are destroyed by brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, strokes (referred to in the health profession as Cerebrovascular Accident, CVA). These brain disorders decreases the blood flow to the brain.

Other causes of Dementia can include AIDS, high fever, lyme disease, vitamins deficiencies and long term drug or alcohol usage.

The Symptoms of Dementia, in most cases, occur gradually over a period of months and even years. Difficulties such as memory loss, progressing from simply forgetfulness to forgetting recent events, familiar faces and names or directions/instructions. At the same time the sufferer can also suffer with depression or delirium.
