To assist you with any questions you have about incontinence, below is our mini guide which is not intended to replace advice from a health professional or make a diagnosis. Always consult a health professional for further advice and guidance.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is very common with in the UK. It is currently estimated that there is around 13% of women and 5% of men that have a level of urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine and can become more common with age. The intensity can vary from person to person.

There are also other ‘types’ of urinary incontinence such as stress incontinence and an overactive bladder (OAB). Stress incontinence is more common in women than in men and causes urine to leak with the person laughs or coughs. Overactive bladder which is also referred to as urge incontinence is caused by urinary muscle spasms that cause the person an urgency to urinate. Urinary incontinence can also be caused by multiple pregnancies, being overweight or obese or other genetic weaknesses.

Bowel Incontinence

Bowel incontinence or faecal incontinence, which is referred to by health professionals, is the loss or inability to control bowel movements which ultimately results in the involuntary passing of stools.

Similarly to urinary incontinence, the intensity of bowel incontinence can vary from person to person. Some people may feel a sudden need or urge to go to the toilet, sadly in some cases bowel incontinence happens occurs when the person is unable to reach the toilet in time. This is referred to by health professionals as urge bowel incontinence.

Other people may experience no sensation prior to passing a stool. This is referred to as passive incontinence or passive soiling. People may also pass a stool whilst expelling wind.
